Walking the arc

My photography mentor, Shelton Muller, talks frequently about “walking the arc”. What he’s referring to is not settling for just that one position you happen to be in when you first decide to take a photo.
Rather, because a great photograph depends on the light more than on the subject matter, it is imperative that as photographers we explore all the different angles from which we could shoot our subject, whether that be a bride or a crop of fresh picked chillis. We need to investigate what the light is doing to (or for) our subject from different points of view.
And so it was that yesterday, I decided it was time to harvest all the chillis from the bush before they were decimated by the winter frosts.
Cath had just this past week oiled the outdoor setting, and with the wood glowing beautifully, I figured it would make a nice stage upon which to photograph my bounty.
And while I was happy with the first couple of images I shot, I made a point of still moving around the table to see how the light was interacting with the fruit from different perspectives.
Something to bear in mind the next time you are shooting something (or someone).
Don’t settle for the first, or most comfortable, spot from which to shoot.
