Meetup #17 – 50′s pin-up/nose art
Today saw the Sydney group getting together for meetup #17, our “50′s pin-up/nose art”-inspired shoot.
So many people to thank for today’s shoot…
The venue, suggested by group member John Humphreys, was the HARS Museum (Historical Aviation Restoration Society) at the Illawarra Regional Airport about 90 minutes south of Sydney. Thanks for the tip, John.
Our two models, Nadine and Joanne were absolutely stunning, great to work with, and both of them totally got into their various roles. Thanks girls!
Also, huge thanks to Michael Good from Xceed Photography who joined us and shared his expertise with studio lighting. Thanks Michael!
The many ladies and gents at HARS, who were very accomodating of a bunch of crazy photographers!
Group member Lee Gatland who pulled some strings at his place of employment to borrow a couple of 50′s-era QANTAS uniforms for the girls to model. Nice work, Lee, thanks!
Group member Jeni Nagy who sourced us a “uniform” which we never got around to modelling. Thanks for going to the trouble, Jen!
And finally, thanks to the OTHER Michael, from Dragon Image in Sydney, who loaned me a FlashPro 5.0P strobe to put through its paces. Mmmmm, how is that company credit card looking right now? ![]()
Everyone seemed to have a great time today, which is always a good thing!
The thing I took away from today (again, thanks Michael for your experience and perspective) was that sometimes, you don’t NEED all the light modifiers and such.
For shooting a genre like this, you need to ask yourself, HOW was this stuff shot originally?
And the simple answer is… NOT with umbrellas and softboxes!
Nope, just hard flash, mostly front on.
It was a great experience, and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
Great stuff Bruce, the models look great. Have you been watching Moose Petersons Avation tutes? Great shot of plane landing, you can see the motion of the props. Was it shot at 1/250 ?
