Day 09 – December 24

Today is a short day on the road (about 3 hours), so before we left, Keith and Christine took us for a quick tour of Kalgoorlie.
This included a stop at the viewing area for the Super Pit.
The Super Pit, as the name suggests, is a very large hole in the ground.
So far, the pit has reached a length of around 3.5km, a width of around 1.5km and a vertical depth of about 500 metres!
If you look at the very centre of the first image of the mine (the wide shot), you’ll see a road heading up and to the left.
A little way up that road, you’ll see an object.
That, my friends, is a Caterpiller 797F dump truck (or something very similar). They are the ones famous for turning misplaced vehicles into pancakes. Kind of gives an idea of the scale of this place.
Then there was an opportunity to grab a shot of the kind of road trains you see in this part of the country. Out on the highways, you see (at fairly frequent intervals) signs reminding you that these road trains can be up to 58 metres in length and that you should be mindful of this fact when considering overtaking!
We said goodbye to Keith and Christine and hit the road for Bruce Rock, my hometown, where we’ll be spending Christmas Day.
