The plan was to hit the road reasonably early so as to make it out to Dubbo by lunch time, thus allowing us time to visit Western Plains Zoo in the afternoon.
Along the way, we pulled up at a roadside picnic area for a cuppa, only to find these remarkable rock formations nearby. Naturally, a few frames had to be fired.
Once in Dubbo, we headed out to the zoo in the 38ºC (100ºF) heat only to find that most of the animals had hunkered down and were nowhere to be seen. The ones that could be seen were the ones in smaller enclosures. Unfortunately, this means that my images don’t do the zoo justice. The beauty of the Western Plains Zoo is that most of the animals are in really large enclosures (the giraffes and zebras have something like a 5 acre paddock to roam in!), and for the most part, fences are designed to be either not visible, or at the least, unobtrusive.
One other great feature of this zoo is that your admission ticket is good for 2 consecutive days, so we knew that we could come back in the morning and hopefully catch the animals out and about before the heat drove them out of sight again.
We’ll see how we go tomorrow.
