We hit the road South heading for Cordoba. After a couple of hours, it was time for a break and we’d been seeing all these castles on every second hilltop. Cath spotted one and suggested that we get off the highway and stop for a look. To be honest, I was a little dubious about the crane rising above it. I felt it would ruin the photo opportunities but we decided we would do it anyway. We drove up to what is known as Castillo de Consuegra, and for the princely sum of €4.50 (around about AUD$8), we were able to walk through the castle and much to my surprise, nothing was roped off or barricaded! You could get close to everything, you could look in cupboards, you could sit on seats… and there was no one around! We saw maybe half a dozen people during our time there. For me this was one of the most interesting stops we made in our entire trip.
Back on the road, we drove past hundreds of kilometres of olive groves. Eventually I pulled the car over and took a couple of shots. It reminded me of Borneo with that country’s miles and miles of palm plantations. I later found out that Spain produces 2/3 of the world’s olive oil!
We arrived in Cordoba and spent the afternoon walking the streets. We also booked a flamenco show for that evening, and were fortunate enough to have front row seats. Nice. Photos without heads in the way. I’ll take it! After the flamenco show, we stopped in a little tea house for coffee and dessert. It was here that I shot the portrait of Cath sitting on the lounge, along with some images of the interior of the place.
Finally, a couple of shots of the Roman bridge (Puente Romano) as we walked back to our Air b’n’b.
