Breakfast in the hotel cafe reminded us that we are in a predominantly Muslim country.
No bacon!
Aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhh! Why didn’t somebody warn me about this? Ok, this two week trip is going to be more challenging than I originally thought. 🙂
Once fed, we again headed out to explore the city some more.
Along the way, I noticed these unprotected holes in the footpath. In any modern, “we’ll relieve you of all responsibility”-mentality countries, these would be sign posted, with safety measures all around them, to prevent you from falling in the hole. Here? Nope. There’s a hole in the ground. If you can’t keep your eyes open, that’s your problem, buddy!
Before long, we ended up in a shopping centre, mainly for its allure of air conditioning. You know that episode of The Simpsons where every second store is a Starbucks? Well, in KK, every second store sells computers, tablets and/or mobile phones. Max soon spied some “Beats by Dr Dre” headphones for the princely sum of 22 ringgit (yup, A$7!). At that price, they’re more than likely knock offs, but they sounded fine, so he bought a pair.

And this particular shopping centre had a car dealership in the centre court! Gotta say, I’ve not seen THAT before.
We ventured back out into the heat, heading roughly in the direction of our hotel. Along the way, we saw a shop selling fresh, living seafood, and a bar with some funky signs on their chalkboards. We then choose a street cafe (almost every OTHER second store in KK!) from which to grab some lunch. We were quickly learning to appreciate how cheap it is to eat here, particularly if you love seafood. Dinner tonight though, would prove to blow our minds on that front.
We spent a few hours back at the hotel resting our feet while Max made good use of the swimming pool.
As the sun began to set over the South China Sea, we headed down to the waterfront markets in search of dinner. Cath and I had a meal consisting of tiger prawns (which incidentally, were each about 20cm in length! See the photo!), calamari and a whole lobster, served with fresh local vegetables and rice for…. wait for it…. 45 ringgit! Yes my math-loving friends, that is about A$15. I’ve died and gone to heaven, right? I couldn’t get a meal of just ONE of those core ingredients for that price in Australia!
