We had a free morning, which Cath and Max spent at the hotel pool, while I went off in search (sans-camera) of a new memory card, having just discovered that one of mine had died.
The afternoon began with a 90 minute bus ride south from KK to a spot on a river (to be honest, I have no idea where we were, and I can’t locate it on Google maps, either) for some primate spotting.
This WAS to be an outting in search of proboscis monkeys, but the rain was being persistent, and Nasha mentioned that if it didn’t ease, we may not see many (or any) at all.
We got to the river, and the rain continued to fall, although not too heavily.
We set off in search of the primates, and while we did see some, they were a long way away from us. This made shooting the orang utans seem like a walk in the park (or ‘forest’, if you prefer).
Imagine trying to handhold at 300mm, f5.6, 800iso, with your flash firing at full power (your subject matter is a good 30-40 METERS/90-120 FEET away!) whilst standing on the bow of a boat which is bobbing up and down on a river. On top of that, the rain is still falling, and your lens is slowly fogging up. Like I said, it made the orang utans look easy.
